The Meccano Society of Scotland
2020 Virtual Exhibition - Part 2
The club should have attended various exhibitions during the course of 2020. Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus epidemic virtually all of them were cancelled. We have therefore decided to put on a 'virtual' exhibition to allow members to display the models they would normally have displayed at exhibitions throughout the year. Eleven members have entered this virtual exhibition and photos of their models are spread over two pages on this website.
A random selection of models from this 'Virtual Exhibition' appear at the top of this page, but they can all be seen over the two pages of photo galleries.
In addition some of our members have provided videos of their models working. These videos can be seen further down the page.
ENJOY
High resolution versions of the photos are also available to view or download if desired. In most browsers clicking on a thumbnail, will make that image stay on the webpage and you can then click on the link to get the high resolution version.

Virtual Exhibition 2020 - A model of a Trawler built by Keith Remnant.
This was an early Meccano plan, but it looked just like a small cargo vessel. I showed it to a retired fisherman at the Elgin exhibition who told me what it should like. So I took it home that evening, modified it and took it back the next day and showed it to him. He said, "Now that's a trawler." (02/01/2017)Click here to see higher resolution photo

Virtual Exhibition 2020 - A model of a pre-war American Limo by Keith Remnant. I saw a photo on one of the Meccano Facebook pages and decided this was the next model I wanted to build, so I made this one up as I went on. It has a motor but I couldn't get the steering wheel to link with the front wheels of the vehicle, so although it moves, it can't be steered.
The fold down section at the back is made from leather cut from and old jacket.
When I showed it at the first Zoom meeting, Brendan referred to it as a "gangster" car and expected to see a machine gun poking out from a window! (13/06/2020)Click here to see higher resolution photo

Then a Set 9 bus, upgraded with interior and displayed as route 124, the bus I used to catch to school. To the right of the bus is an oil tanker. The model followed on from an article on what was then believed to be the largest oil tanker in the world, the Spyros Niarchos which had been featured in the March 1956 edition of the Meccano Magazine, and on which the published model plans were loosely based. This model was built by my older brother Dennis Remnant some years ago, and kindly donated to me. (03/11/2019)

Virtual Exhibition 2020 - A model of the "Lion" locomotive built by Keith Remnant. Lion is a Victorian locomotive built in 1838 and worked alongside her sister loco, Tiger, on the Liverpool to Manchester railway.
She had a varied career, including being worked as a static engine pumping water around Liverpool docks. She was rescued before being sold for scrap and was eventually restored to full working order in steam and toured the country appearing in railway festivals and displays.
She appeared in three films including the title role in the 1953 Ealing Comedy film, The Titfield Thunderbolt, the first of their films to be produced in Technicolour, hence my model is of Thunderbolt from plans published in MM that year. (I think)
She was eventually retired and is now on permanent static display in the Liverpool Railway Museum under her real name and livery, Lion. (18/05/2019)Click here to see higher resolution photo

Virtual Exhibition 2020 - A model of a Mississippi Paddle Steamer built by Keith Remnant. My interest in jazz and all things Southern, Southern Gospel, Bluegrass, Country, Appalachion mountain music etc, extends to the Mississippi Paddle Steamers. I've seen one or two smallish modcderls, I seem to remembner the MSoS sold one a wee while ago. My one is a freelance model built from photos and drawings trawled off the internet. There is a motor under the boiler room running a discreetly disguised chain drive which turns the paddle assembly. The motor has so far run without problems during several excursions to the Elgin exhibition. (24/02/2018)

Virtual Exhibition 2020 - A Thunderbird 2 model built by Keith Remnant.
This box turned up unexpectedly on my doorstep one Father's day. No card or note with it! But I figured out it was from my son who ordered it on line and had it delivered direct to me, so he didn't get the chance to put a card in. He thought it was a model that actually flew! Virtual Exhibition 2020 - A Meccano bridge with Lego piers built by Keith Remnant. At an exhibition 4 years ago I met another exhibitor who had examples of several different construction systems, none of which were compatible. He had a 3D printer and was interested in making parts to make the different systems work together.
So I built the bridge, just a freelance invention of my own, and built the piers using the Lego that used to belong to my children and grandchildren!
I made a 3D model in Autocad of the black parts fully dimensioned and sent them to the other exhibitor to get a quote to make them. The idea was that I would then bolt the Meccano bridge to the Lego piers. He quoted £16.00 EACH. £64.00 was just out of the question, but I noted that the distance between the studs was compatible with the distance between the downstands of the angle girders. So I superglued the black parts of Lego together and cut slots with a tenon saw. Hey presto, one Legano bridge. I bought the road and cars at another of the the Elgin exhibitions and have just made up the little diorama to complete it. (2010s)Click here to see higher resolution photo
