The electronics for Santa's Sleigh by Brendan Harris - More of an electronics project than an exercise in Meccano modelling, I made full use of so-called “Pocket Money Projects”, obtained through my membership of MERG. I joined the Model Electronic Railway Group for Hornby-Dublo purposes and thoroughly recommend this organisation as a wonderful help for both understanding and incorporating electronics into Meccano models. The Pocket Money Projects have been a great introduction for me into the world of electronics and are easily adaptable for use in my Meccano models.
This project uses two Random Light PMP12s for the twinkling star “night sky”, a PMP20 for the LED strips beneath the sleigh (adding the TIP127 transistor option as explained in the instructions), a PMP21 twin flasher for Rudolph and partner’s green and red flashing noses and a combination of the 555 timer and the 4017 decade counter chip for the running lights on the side of Santa’s sleigh.

Brendan Harris' model of a Scissors Lift Access Platform model is based on the Tony James’ Set 10 Model Plan MP240 and is very satisfying to build and operate. (22/01/2021)

In the Model Plan, the model has a battery operated forward/reverse gear mechanism for both the hoist and the driven wheels, with no clutch. I found this ‘crash’ forward/reverse arrangement noisy and difficult to achieve engagement every time. I introduced a speed controller and a centre-off double-pole double-throw switch to control both forward / reverse and raising / lowering the hoist. I replaced the battery box with the control panel. The gears remain engaged / disengaged by the push rod at the rear.
As an additional feature, I put two flashing warning lights at the top of the hoist cage. The PWM (pulse width modulation) Speed Controller and Flashing Light are both built from Pocket Money Kits supplied through membership of MERG. I am a member of the Model Electronic Railway Group for Hornby-Dublo purposes and thoroughly recommend this organisation as a wonderful help for both understanding and incorporating electronics into Meccano models.
